Best Dog Bike Trailer: Our Top 10 List

If you’re on the hunt for a versatile trailer that you can use for other purposes, then look no further than the Best Choice Products 2-in-1 Pet Stroller and Trailer.  

First off, we love that we’re getting a bike trailer and a pet stroller for the price of one product! This 2-in-1 unit can carry large and medium dogs or multiple small dogs. In our case, we have three Pomeranian siblings that don’t like being apart from each other, and this trailer fits them all.  

The exterior is made with a lightweight alloy steel frame and water-resistant polyester fabric. One front wheel for stroller use and two large rear wheels make the trailer easy to maneuver, whether on sandy or grassy terrain. 

We like that it has three opening points that make it easy for us to access our dogs. The interior is spacious, and even with three dogs, there’s still room for their water bottles, towels, and treats. 

And if you need more space? There are two exterior side pockets for your phone, keys, and other valuables. Small straps hold the smaller assembly pieces so they won’t get lost, which is a nice touch.

Plenty of windows allow our dogs to sight-see without having to huddle around one window. The mesh screen provides breathability while protecting the dogs from debris and the front opening has a plastic protective cover for weather protection.    

For daily walks, we like using it as a stroller, with its adjustable handles for different heights. We even use this for occasional nightly strolls with our babies, and the safety features such as the safety flag and reflectors ensure we’re visible. 

In addition to that… 

One of this unit’s best features is the safety brakes, which are especially useful when going down hills. The front wheel can also be locked when not in use. 

This trailer has earned our Top Pick award for its versatility and very useful features. 

Now, here’s the kicker… 

If you’re planning to buy this, definitely check the measurement of your doorway. This trailer is surprisingly large, so make sure not to assemble it inside a room with a small door. We now store it in the garage, which has a big door. 

It also took us some time to assemble it as the photos in the instructions manual included are so dark and small. It obviously doesn’t affect the quality of the product, but it would’ve been better with clearer instructions.

If you have larger dogs that you want to take with you on a long bike ride, the PetSafe Happy Ride Aluminum Dog Bicycle Trailer will do the job. 

With this dog trailer, you can choose between the medium size that can carry medium-sized dogs up to 55 pounds and the large size with a maximum weight capacity of up to 110 pounds. You can also select your frame of choice, be it aluminum or steel.

For this review, we opted for the large size and the aluminum frame. That’s because we have a 98-pound Rottweiler, and we need something that can accommodate large dogs. 

We’re very impressed with this unit! The trailer has such a durable yet lightweight construction, which is perfect for our needs, as our Rottie is plenty heavy enough as is. The aluminum frame is rust-proof and sturdy, and everything is high-quality, from the zippers to the netting.

The trailer’s design also features a wide wheelbase and a low center of gravity, resulting in a stable and smooth ride and an easy entry and exit. Thanks to its universal bicycle hitch, it connects easily to almost any bike.

What’s more… 

It has plenty of safety features, such as the adjustable tether you can attach to your dog’s harness to keep them securely in place, and reflectors for visibility, especially at night. Other noteworthy features are the external pockets for your dog’s water container, snacks, and other necessities, and a cushion.

And you can definitely use this trailer in any weather! The zippered mesh screens and clear vinyl layers on the doors, the waterproof floorboard, sunroof, and ventilated windows make it weather-proof while giving your dog a beautiful view of the place. 

And at the end of a fun day… 

The trailer easily collapses for storage. The wheels pop on and off, and while the unit’s collapsed size is still quite large, we never had a problem with storage.

Because of its great quality, features, and large capacity, we pick this trailer as our Editor’s Choice.

That said…

This trailer is not without imperfections. For one, the cushion slides around easily, which is quite annoying. We did solve this issue by adding some Velcro to keep it in place. It’s also not compatible with tricycle bikes, so keep that in mind before buying.

With a weight limit of 55 pounds, this trailer is perfect for our 32-pound Beagle. Our baby girl has short legs, so as much as we want to take her with us biking, she just wouldn’t be able to keep up.

This cute trailer allows us to take our dog with us on any outdoor activity. It’s extremely easy to install, and assembling and disassembling only take minutes. It doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, which is expected considering the price, but we like how each detail is well-thought-out. 

It features a sturdy steel frame and two air-filled tires with 16-inch aluminum rims for a smoother ride. The air-filled tires inflate with any standard bicycle wheel pump, while the included Schwinn Universal Coupler is versatile and attaches to most bikes.  

A doggy door makes going in and out easy for our little baby. Inside the trailer, there’s plenty of room for her toys, blanket, and lunch bags. There’s also an adjustable leash that ensures your dog won’t jump out of the unit. Keeping your dog comfortable on long rides is the non-slip rubber mat, and the windows let your dog see out.  

Moreover… 

We tested out this trailer on a rainy day, and we’re happy to say that our dog stayed dry as a bone, thanks to the adjustable weather shield with a bug screen. We like that there’s a safety flag for visibility on the road.

It’s lightweight, as well. In fact, we barely feel like we’re towing a trailer behind us! We only noticed the weight when biking up hills. Our Best Value awardee also folds up nicely for storage, and the ride is overall smooth with no tipping at all.

There’s a catch, though… 

When we first got it, there was a noticeable rubbery smell, which wasn’t exactly pleasant. However, it did go away the next day after we left it alone sitting overnight. Also, because it has a low profile, it can be a bit hard to look back when checking on your dog, but it can be done.

If you have extra money to spare and want something more premium for your pet, then you won’t regret investing in the Burley D’Lite X Bike Trailer. This is one of Burley Design’s top-of-the-line bike trailers, and it’s definitely a standout.  

This trailer isn’t designed for dogs, but we saw no reason why we can’t use it for our fur baby. It’s easy to modify to accommodate your pet, which is what we did, and it can hold up to 75 pounds (1-seat) or 105 pounds (2-seat). 

We used this on our recent camping trip with our very outdoorsy Alaskan Malamute, and we must say the quality and construction are totally impressive. It’s built with 600D water-resistant fabric that holds up in the rain and other extreme weather conditions, and a rugged aluminum frame. The premium 20-inch wheels, along with the 5-position adjustable suspension dials, offer the smoothest riding experience in any condition. 

In short, this is definitely the trailer you’d want to use on the bumpiest roads or the roughest of terrains. 

On top of that…

It’s also equipped with loads of features for an enjoyable experience. Giving your dog a beautiful panoramic view are the full-length windows that also provide UV rays protection. On hot summer days, we just roll up the plastic covers on the front and rear windows and secure them with elastic straps; this allows optimal ventilation throughout the interior. There’s also a sunshade for extra protection that you can tuck away when not needed. 

Some of the best things about the design for us are the bowed-out sides for more room inside, as well as the strategically placed reflective accents that make the trailer visible from all angles.  

There are also a safety flag, reflectors, a hub parking brake to lock the wheels in place when loading and unloading your pet, huge cargo storage at the rear, which we use for food and water supply, blankets, a soft cooler bag, and our dog’s bigger toys, and light loops at the back for additional lighting.

The interior is just as impressive. There are one or two seats inside, depending if you choose the 1-seat or 2-seat option. The seat has padding, which our dog really enjoyed, and it’s adjustable in three positions. It also has an independent recline and can drop down for more space.

We really like the lining on the bottom for easy clean-up. Our dog sometimes eats inside the trailer, and if the lining gets dirtied up, we can just remove it, shake it off or wash it, and the floor remains clean. There are also nice little mesh pockets for your dogs’ small treats and toys. 

This trailer includes a 1-wheel Stroller Kit for easy stroller conversion. The ergonomic handlebar can be adjusted for your height.

As far as performance goes, there’s nothing about this that we didn’t like. It rolls with exceptional smoothness, really pulls like a dream, and there’s only minimal drag. It’s also easier to use than we thought, which is a plus.

Now… 

This unit is really expensive, but it’s money well spent. Every detail is well-thought-out, the quality is excellent, and the performance has been superb in any terrain, and it’s absolutely worth it, in our opinion.

The Thule Chariot Lite Multisport Trailer and Stroller is a great option for very active pet owners who like taking their dogs on various adventures. 

Weighing only 25.7 pounds, this bike dog trailer is very lightweight and easy to tow, even with our 57-pound Labradoodle enjoying the ride on a snowy day.

As we said, it’s a fantastic trailer for lots of outdoor activities. It includes strolling and biking kits, but the jogging and skiing kits are sold separately. It’s very easy to switch between activities, with the Thule Click n’ Store and Thule VersaWing systems making quick conversion possible— the kits are stored directly on the trailer when not in use.

This trailer is all-season-capable and can handle pretty much any terrain. The oversized wheels provide easy mobility, even on snowy terrain, and the suspension is excellent, really giving a smooth ride. 

It also has many weather-protection features, such as adjustable ventilation vents to keep cool on warm days, a sunshade that you can adjust depending on where the sun is hitting, and a rain cover with clips that you can hook to the back and bottom part of the exterior. 

Also… 

We like the 5-point harness on the single seat, which gives us peace of mind that our dog is safe and secure inside. 

In stroller mode, it works just as well, whether in dry or wet conditions. We like the large storage pocket at the rear. We’ve used this trailer many times already, but we mostly use this in winter, so the pocket is useful for storing our dog’s winter gear. There are rear lights for visibility, and the handlebar is adjustable so you can have a comfortable position for your height.

There are some little things we didn’t like, though… 

While we like how large the rear pocket is, we dislike that it’s connected to the trailer itself; there’s no separation, so we can only store soft items in there as we don’t want to poke our dog in the back. We wish the bottom liner is removable, as well.

Whether you want to go on a walk through the neighborhood or go biking with your dog on your next vacation, the Ibiyaya 2-In-1 Happy Pet Dog Stroller is a dual-purpose unit that enables you to do both— and more! 

Upon seeing it, we instantly liked the very open design, with four entrance options for our dogs. It has openings on the top, front, sides, and rear, which is great for optimal airflow. The base of the carriage also sits quite high to keep your dog away from dust and dirt. 

Our two 12-pound Boston Terrier puppies fit perfectly inside, and we like that it has plenty of room for when they grow up to be in the 20-pound range. If you have small puppies, you’ll get a lot of use from this for many years. 

We took it with us, along with our two puppies, to a recent vacation in Clearwater Beach, where we did a lot of beach biking. The trailer is very easy to pull and rolls effortlessly, even on the wet sand. We also tried it on the road, and we love how shock-absorbing the wheels are.  

Our dogs really enjoyed the view, with four zippable mesh windows on all four sides. We like that they can see through the front window that their parents are riding the bike towing the trailer, so they feel safe. There’s also a non-toxic clear rain cover and sunroof for further weather protection. 

Additionally…

In stroller mode, it’s easy to push, and we find that the wheels make zero noise. Aside from the standard features, you’ll see in most bike trailers, it also boasts a quick-release rear brake system, built-in suspension, a lockable front swivel wheel, and two cup holders at the back for drinks or anything you want to access quickly, and reflector plates for nightly biking. 

All of these are housed in a heavy-duty steel frame. 

For storage, the unit is easily foldable, and the simple quick-release wheel system allows you to snap and click the wheels for disassembly. The trailer flats down, and we’ve had no problem fitting it into a closet, under the bed, or in the trunk.

The included tethers are quite hard to unclip off their collar sometimes, but all in all, we have no major complaints.

If you need a sturdy and large trailer for your medium to large dog, the Burley Design Tail Wagon Bike Trailer could be what you’re looking for.  

As expected of a Burley Design product, this trailer has top-notch construction. It’s also packed with features for a fun and comfortable experience. The set-up was so fast— we just had to pop up the frame, click in the brackets, attach the wheels, and it’s assembled and ready to roll! To test this, we took our 68-pound Golden Retriever for several rides using this trailer. 

Our girl is on the large side and could squeeze into the entry flap with no issues. The flip-down tailgate makes loading and unloading much easier, and our dog can easily jump in and out. She’s easily scared by things, but she surprisingly warmed up to the trailer right away. We like the stiff side battens, which add to the feeling of security we think our dog feels.

Both the front and back flaps have 2-in-1 weatherproof vinyl covers that you can roll up using the velcro loops when the weather is good, and you want more ventilation for your dog. They can also be closed down with waterproof zippers when it’s raining. The windows on all four sides have heavy-duty mesh screens to keep out bugs and elements while still maintaining good airflow.

The trailer is super stable— our dog can sit, lay down, or even ride while standing, which she loves doing, and it’s just so nice seeing her enjoy the scenery with her head poking out a bit and her ears flapping in the wind. She even started enjoying people’s attention on her! The trailer itself got lots of compliments from strangers, as well. 

As if that’s not enough…

This trailer features 16-inch alloy quick-release wheels, which minimize the impact of bumps on the road. It steers easily and is very smooth on grass, dirt, and unpaved trails. 

Other features include inner loops for hooking up the leash, a parking brake at the rear, a handlebar, a removable and washable floor lining, lots of cargo pockets for pet gear, and front and rear reflectors, and a safety flag. You can also purchase the stroller kit if you want to use it as a stroller.

But keep in mind… 

We feel like the floor lining isn’t cushiony enough for us, so if you want the most comfortable experience for your dog, we suggest adding a crate pad or memory foam for extra padding, which is what we did. We also wish the exterior pockets had zippered closures, but it’s not a deal-breaker.

The Retrospec Rover Waggin’ Pet Bike Trailer is another excellent option for a moderately priced trailer. This trailer accommodates dogs up to 50 pounds, making it ideal for small to medium dogs, like our 46-pound Australian Shepherd dog.  

Right away, we like the lovely blue color that makes the trailer easy to spot from far away. It has a doggy rear door for easy entrance and exit and a zipper for increased security. It’s also a breeze to assemble, in less than twenty minutes, and the wheels and wheel guards are easy to install.

It was raining on the day we tested this trailer, but the weather-resistant fabric and 2-in-1 canopy kept our dog completely dry and protected from the elements. We appreciate the mesh screens on the windows and the plastic cover on the front window that enabled our dog to enjoy a 360° view even with the unpleasant weather.  

Once our dog is in, the back is still spacious enough to hold the bag containing her treats and other things. We were even able to add a pillow! Lining the bottom is washable anti-slip rubber flooring, and the internal leash hooks up to the harness to keep the dog safe.

On the exterior, you’ll find built-in safety reflectors, a safety flag, and a pouch to hold more doggy things. The trailer is very lightweight, and we honestly didn’t feel like we were even pulling a trailer behind. It’s easy to hook and unhook from the bike, as well. 

Furthermore… 

The trailer features sturdy steel components, and the frame is durable but perfectly collapsible. It folds down easily into a compact size for easy transport and storage— great if you don’t have a garage to store it in. We’ve had no issues fitting it into our car trunk either.

But here’s the deal… 

It has a tendency to tip over to the side a little bit, so make sure you’re there to hold the bike firmly when your dog is getting in. We wish there were plastic covers on the side windows too.

Another product from Thule that we swear by is the Thule Cadence 2-Seat Bicycle Trailer. 

This trailer is great if you just want something simple for biking in the park or running errands with your dog. It uses the Thule EZ hitch axle mount, and we always have a very easy time hitching it to a wide variety of bikes.  

The construction of this trailer is awesome— the fabric is sturdy, the stitching is very good, and the sturdy, lightweight aluminum roll cage keeps your dog safe and protected. The wheels are large, which helps with stability, and the bike tires absorb bumps well.

We live in a place with a subtropical climate, so good ventilation and sun protection are essential to us when out and about with our dogs. This is why we appreciate the UV-resistant clear plastic cover on the front, which can be rolled up. When the cover is up, your dog stays protected from elements and bugs by the mesh screen, which you can also roll up for more fresh air to come in! 

And if you need more UV rays protection, there’s the sunshade that you can pull back to double as a rear cover. Speaking of the rear, one of this trailer’s best features is the extra-large storage at the back for cargo, which we often use for picnic stuff such as food, utensils, and picnic blankets. 

There’s plenty of headroom inside the trailer. The seat has no recline, but it leans back enough for our dogs to be comfortable, and a 3-point harness keeps them secure and safe. A small mesh pocket holds their favorite little toys and doggy treats.  

Besides that… 

It’s very nimble, which we weren’t expecting as it’s quite heavily constructed. We wouldn’t say it’s so light that it feels like we weren’t towing a trailer, but it glides through, and there’s no wheel resistance. It’s also easy to disassemble for storage; it folds down, and the wheels pop off with almost no effort.

Still… 

We think it could’ve been better if the side panels open and the instruction manual wasn’t in black and white, but neither of those is a big deal to us.

Rounding up our list is one more Burley Design product; this time, it’s the Burley Tail Wagon® Pet Bike Trailer. 

For this last product, we decided to put it to the test with the help of our senior Basset Hound, who weighs about 72 pounds. He has a hard time walking now, and this trailer is just perfect for his needs. 

The exterior features a lightweight frame, drum-tight fabric for added security, a mesh storage pocket at the back for our dog’s essentials, and a large rear tailgate with low clearance, which any owner of senior dogs or short-legged dogs will appreciate, as it makes getting in and out easier. Reflective pipings, integrated reflectors, and a safety flag are featured for visibility.

Upon opening the front panel, you’ll see the spacious interior, which can fit dogs up to 23 inches in height and up to 29 inches long. You can roll up the front panel, so your dog can look out and see the world without walking. Mesh windows on both sides ensure good breathability and ventilation.

Another good thing about this is that the interior is pet-safe and doesn’t have sharp edges, hooks, or anything like that, which can injure your dog, especially senior dogs who can’t see properly anymore. It has a durable construction, and the push-button wheels are capable of handling even rocky terrains and uneven surfaces.

Overall…

It’s a very thoughtfully designed trailer, and we’re glad we found something that works for our old furry friend.

However…

As you can probably tell by now, Burley Design’s products aren’t cheap, but we think it’s one of those cases where “You get what you pay for” applies— every product we’ve tried from the brand has been exceptional in quality, so they are worth the money, in our experience. 

The bigger downside for us is that this trailer doesn’t have cover protection. Therefore, we don’t recommend this during winter or rainy days.
